Television Dramas
I think the only reason I watch formula dramas is to see if the male lead and female lead will get together: Fringe, Bones, House, SVU, god only knows which others. I don’t think of myself as a romance obsessed girl, but perhaps my self-assessments have been wrong.

Some mental disorders aren’t merely common—they’re the norm.
Doesn’t that make these disorders a feature of being human, not a bug?

Excellent feature from Under The Radar. I quite enjoy Kevin’s very genuine curiosity and fascination with their history, technique, etc. Here’s part two.

on Veronica Mars when Wallace calls “Yo La Tengo” “Yo Yo Taco”?
Cause that just made my day.
Champo, you have so much to look forward to.
Saturday Night In Hong Kong: In Two Parts
Part 1:
“The Pawn.” A bar in Wan Chai (HK’s Soho), filled with only white Americans, all slightly sunburned from afternoons at the American Club and on boats. Absurdly expensive drinks and their martini olives had pits. All but three, me included, were married, two of the girls with babies on the way. It was wretched and I felt young and wasteful.

1). I actually like the television show Psych!; I think it is charming. AND this week’s episode guest stars Kenan, Urkel, and the music of Boyz II Men.
2). The site I use to watch television shows (no hulu or Megavideo in this neck of the woods) has a banner that features a man, a woman, a horse and a giant dog with the words “World’s Biggest Dog: REAL OR FAKE?” I have not...
In the same way, Jeremy Sisto on Law & Order thrills me. Even when he’s talking about finding murderers, I know he really wants to find his Cranberries CD (it’s out on the quad).
This makes me so happy
Neve Campbell’s going to return for Scream 4, but nobody gives a shit because they killed Randy in Scream 2. Though it’s nice to see Neve Campbell again, I have nothing nice to add to this except to say that Scream 2 had an exceptionally good soundtrack. One example: D’Angelo’s cover of Prince’s “She’s Always In My Hair,” which first appeared on it,...

Raymond Chandler Cameos in Bored to Death!*
Maybe I should start solving crimes?
Oh, who am I kidding? I am having a dinner party in two hours and am drinking white wine, have not cooked anything but brownies, and am not dressed for company.
*Also, I am totally charmed by Bored to Death, but it might be homesickness or the Kate/ Sasha influence. But Kudos, HBO. I even miss the guy I know who is like an unfunny ZG now (nod to RXH).
Raymond Chandler: Why I should Listen to My Elders
This time last year, my father and I were both reading Lush Life and enjoying it thoroughly. He told me that if I liked Price, I should read Raymond Chandler, if I had not already. I had not. For Christmas, he gave me a copy of The Long Goodbye, but it fell by the wayside for all of spring and summer. When packing for Hong Kong, it ended up in the stack of books that I packed.
I have just...
songs that still give me goosebumps
The first time I saw Okkervil River, Will Sheff was still in Shearwater and both bands were opening for Centro-matic at the now renamed Mercury in Austin. This was pre-Black Sheep Boy, probably in the Down the River of Golden Dreams days, maybe.
It was summer and we were 18, maybe 19, old enough to get in but not to drink. We drove downtown with two bottles of red wine stolen from my...
Monk's Milk
In the dairy (sort of, most of it is actually soy-based) aisle at the Parkn’Shop today, I discovered that most of the dairies that supply milk to Hong Kong are actually monasteries on the smaller islands or in the New territories. After much deliberation, I settled on the Trappist dairy.
Also, all milk that is not whole milk or cream must be labled “Milk Product.” So...
On Hong Kong and food
The food here is amazing. I have not eaten a bad meal here yet, from the pork noodle soup that is sold in the shanty part-way up the peak to the China Club and everything in between. It has, however, all been Chinese food, not because the city only has Chinese food- it has everything, from Cuban to Ukranian- but because I love Chinese food have been taking advantage of it. Even when I stay home to...
the WORST
"Business As Usual"
- Hong Kong, on the recession.
There are signs at stores everywhere. “Business As Usual” Louis Vuitton. It is the citywide position, sponsored by the Chinese equiv. of the chamber of comerce.
Katy Perry was here last night opening some sort of luxury hotel and I missed it! Sometimes staying home to watch submarine movies is NOT the right choice.

Tied to some stuff vs. tied with some stuff: Which is the more appropriate explanation?
“To” is correct. I altered because Bakes’s reblog made me realize that it could be interpreted as “tied with” as in “a tie” instead of “related to.”
Jeffrey: is hunt for red october based on true events? because the beginning makes it out to be kind of
me: it is based on a tom clancy novel and i was JUST talking about how rad a movie it is
Jeffrey: which is based on true events, right?
Jeffrey: you told me once it was your favorite movie.
me: it is
Jeffrey: you have since told me many other movies are your favorite movie.
me: i mean, it is tied to some stuff. what's wrong with having more than one favorite?
Jeffrey: oooh, he's fred DALTON thompson in this
me: isn't he always?
Jeffrey: is he? i never noticed.

Pinback: A Love Story
As a sophmore in college, I frequented a restaurant called Toast on 123rd and Broadway. They had the most brilliant burgers, cheap wine and few Columbia kids. It was generally quiet, Pavement softly playing in the background, baseball on a tv or two. The first time I went, there was a waiter wearing a Pinback shirt. Again and again, when I went back, same waiter. He remembered my usual order and...

Rain Storms and Bookstores
Here in Hong Kong, we are in the midst of a category 8 typhoon. The city has issued a bulletin that essentially says to stay inside. Grocery stores are out of food. I learned the hard way that wind will break bedroom windows as one sleeps. Luckily, I have tea, toast, proper marmite, and enough books to weather the storm.
Had I not discovered the most wonderful used bookstore on the Island, I...
An iphone-less world
Because I can’t get a HK phone until I have my residency card and AT&T international is terrifyingly expensive, I am preparing to spend a weekend without an iphone in a city that I do not know my way around at all.
I am currently drawing maps and writing directions to the three places I need to be this afternoon/ evening, as well as writing down which forms of public transportation...
Updates: A & M
A: In Hyderabad, often without a cell phone, to the utter displeasure of M. It takes a long time to get to school because the traffic is insane, motorcycle rickshaws are terrifying. Just returned from a trip to the Himalayas, which is just about the most beautiful place on earth. Must take ESL as part of her program, is not entirely impressed by this.
M: In Hong Kong, totally unable to remember...
